A comprehensive guide to understanding Chat GPT and Bard

Posted by EIS Blogger, in E-commerce

In this blog, we dig deep to understand the scope of these ground-breaking AI tools that will change the way we use the internet.

As a Content Writer, I have come across a multitude of AI-based tools that facilitate research and enhance writing, but none of them gave the AI thriller genre feels like Chat GPT did. So far, Chat GPT is the smartest of them all. The amazing yet scary part is that it is still a work in progress. OpenAI, the founder of Chat GPT, has just given a glimpse of the potential of this mind-blowing tool and marketing professionals like me are in awe and angst. Currently, there is a lot of apprehension surrounding the whole idea of Chat GPT, but all trailblazing technologies encounter reluctance and distrust before being embraced.

Not long after Chat GPT surfaced, Google dropped hints about the launch of their own AI Chat Bot. The launch of Bard is highly anticipated, because of the leverage Google has in terms of Data and its excellent history of AI.

This blog is your guide to understanding how Chat GPT and Bard work, their potential, differences and associated risks.

What is Chat GPT?

Chat GPT is a chatbot developed through the GPT-3 family of large language models and is regulated and fine-tuned through supervised and reinforced learning techniques.

To put it simply, it is an AI-based chatbot that is trained and developed to execute natural communication and conversation. Chat GPT is better at creating content with a language structure i.e human and machine language than any of its predecessors. With simple prompts, it can create original content in the form of text, code, design and even music.

How does Chat GPT work?

As the name indicates, the Generative Pre-trained transformer or GPT is based on transformer architecture, which means it can process a colossal amount of text and learn to execute natural language processing tasks effectively. As it advanced, its capabilities expanded. The current GPT-3 model has a size of 175 billion parameters making it the largest model ever trained.

With minimal keywords as inputs, it produces highly coherent text. Its ability to generate meaningful responses by comprehending the contextual meaning of a conversation is one of the most striking features of Chat GPT-3. This is made possible by "self-attention mechanisms" as they enable the network to evaluate the relevance of keywords and sentences given as prompts.

GPT needs training to work on the large quantity of text. The GPT-3 model encompasses more than 8 million documents and over 10 billion words as a part of its training on a text set. This text is core to the model’s capabilities to execute natural language processing functions and produce seamless and high-quality text. Microsoft’s Bing will feature the AI chatbot powered by Chat GPT4. Bing is already displaying a chat icon above the search bar which will be integrated with Chat GPT4.

What is Google’s Bard?

Quiet similar to Chat GPT, Google Bard is an AI-based Chat Bot that refines complex information and diverse viewpoints into simple formats. It is powered by LaMDA- Language Model for Dialogue Applications. Google has emphasized that it is an AI service they are currently experimenting with.

Bard aims to accumulate global knowledge with the help of intelligence, creativity and large language models by drawing on information from the web to offer brand-new, high-quality responses.

“Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills.” - Sundar Pichai

How does Bard work?

Google launched LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Application) as Google’s next-generation language and conversation potential. Bard is based on a lightweight model of LaMDA, which means it needs much lesser computing power. This is in line with Google’s plan to eventually scale Bard, allowing more users to give their feedback.

Bard will help users swiftly understand the broader picture and enhance their learning using the internet. It encompasses the search for different perspectives, for instance, searching for blogs from a chef who is also an engineer or understanding a specific topic by going to its depth, for example, searching a beginners guide to learn about SEO.

What is the difference between Google Bard and Chat GPT?

Here are the main differences between Chat GPT and Bard-

  • Technology- Bard is based on LaMDA, whereas Chat GPT is based on Generative Pre-trained transformer series of large language models.
  • Reliance on the Internet- Bard derives information from the internet. LaMDA extracts information from the internet and responds in a human-like tone. Chat GPT is trained and fed with a colossal amount of data to develop its knowledge pool.
  • Search Engine integration- Open AI will integrate Chat GPT into Bing. Bard will be a part of the Google Search Engine.
  • Up-to-date Information- As of now, Chat GPT has access to the database till the year 2021. It is unable to generate the latest information. On the contrary, Bard can draw information from the internet. Hence, its responses will be up to date.

Influence on Digital Marketing

I was curious to understand the magnitude of influence tools like Chat GPT and Bard can have on digital marketing. The answer is- substantial. These AI tools can transform digital marketing, making it more efficient and effective. Mentioned below are a few examples:

  • Keyword research: Currently, keyword research is a complex and cumbersome process. We use different keyword research tools to identify relevant keywords as well as keywords used by competitors. Tools like Chat GPT can generate this list with simple prompts, saving resources.
  • Content structuring: These tools can suggest multiple innovative ideas to create content and even draft a template. It can write original, human-like text catering to a particular industry or set of audiences.
  • Optimized content: By giving prompts like- "Suggest a more SEO-friendly phrase" or "Recommend an alternate sentence", these tools can generate several options within seconds. They can also help improve content quality and write comments and product descriptions.
  • Write copy for Ad campaigns, Emails, and Social Media Posts: Not only can tools like Chat GPT and Bard assist in writing Ad copies and compelling emails, but they can also create subject lines for A/B testing CTR and A/B testing open rates. They can also help generate engaging and original social media posts super-quick.
  • Generating responses and customer service: These AI chatbots can be trained to send meaningful, natural-sounding responses and handle customer enquiries efficiently.
  • This is just the tip of the iceberg. The impact of Chat GPT and Bard on different industries and professions is unprecedented. Currently, they are in the trial phase. Their capabilities will improve eventually.

What are the potential problems?

The advent of seemingly human-like AI chatbots and their astonishing capabilities has established one thing very clearly- the way we use the internet is on the brink of witnessing a landmark transformation. It will pave way for some ground-breaking findings and solutions. It will simplify things for users. Being said that, there are several apprehensions and risks surrounding them. Lets address some of them.

Chat GPT has shown a noticeable degree of artificial hallucination. There are several questions surrounding the aspect of plagiarism, incorrect information, left bias, cybersecurity issues and its impact on the education sector as it has apparently qualified law and medical examinations for prominent universities. Will its use be monitored and regulated on a universal scale? There are no concrete answers yet.

The example of Bard respone shown by Google to answer the discoveries from the James Webb telescope (cited in the picture above) has an error. Multiple astronomers emphasized that the first image of an exoplanet was clicked in 2004, giving the reference of the NASA website. This mistake has cost Google $100 billion loss in market value.

I asked Chat GPT to write a hypothetical press release giving it the prompt- "Write a press release for an Autism event held at the Dubai World Trade Centre, attended by the ruler of Dubai." It wrote an excellent Press Release which inclusive of two fictitious, but well-written and original sounding quotes by the ruler of Dubai (which is problematic on many levels).

Would this AI breakthrough it make copywriters and coders redundant? Would its exponential execution cause job loss?

I will quote Bill gates to answer this question.

AI isn’t, as yet, having an effect on the job market, but it will have an effect because it is always a question of what happens if you make things less expensive.

The motto of Open AI is to ensure that Artificial Intelligence benefits all humanity. Google’s objective is- To organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.

These tools are built to make things easy for humans. The very purpose of automation is to reduce manual efforts and enhance efficiency. It is imperative that Chat GPT and Open AI will replace a lot of skilled white-collar jobs. The key is that professionals must learn to live with them and leverage their power to stand out. The bottom line is that instead of concerning about how Chat GPT, Bard and other similar tools will change SEO, Marketing or Education, we should focus on how they will shape user behaviour in the days to come.
